THE MANY
MISTRESSES OF
MARTIN LUTHER KING
by Andrew Dolan
Andrew Dolan is an actor who, aside from his many television and film roles, has performed On and Off Broadway, at the National Theatre in London and in many regional theatres (including 5 seasons as an ACT company member). His first play, That Good Night, was read at New York Stage & Film with a cast that included Reg Rogers, Marin Ireland and Mary Beth Piel. His baseball play 04: A Muse of Fire premiered last March at Mile Square Theatre’s 7th Inning Stretch Festival. He has sold two screenplays and is presently developing several television projects. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College and the American Conservatory Theatre.
Watch any 60 Minutes/NBC Dateline type show about "Race in America" and you'll find the usual suspects repeating the usual talking points. Is the American Theatre a better place to address this vexing issue? Playwright Andrew Dolan doesn’t know. To him, it's always felt too insulated and, quite ironically, too conservative a place for it. A lot of preaching to the converted.
In an effort shake things up, Andrew has endeavored to write a darkly humorous play about a modern American family of mixed races and second wives set in a university town with all its attendant politics, both academic and racial. It all gets pretty wild...
Twilight is particularly attracted to Andrew’s smart theatrical writing. He has a wonderful instinct for the dramatic and a fierce sense of humor. He loves to write characters who behave badly. But there are no stereotypes here. It is multi-layered writing. He gives each character their due. We think The Many Mistresses of Martin Luther King is as lively and provocative as its title.
